The upper Zakum offshore field is in the Arabian Gulf, 84 kilometers from Abu Dhabi. A major oil developer has launched a program to drill and transport oil from the field with a target of 750 MBD (thousands of barrels a day). The developer wants to sustain that rate for at least 25 years and recover 70% of proven reserves. Four new artificial islands are being constructed for the project.
